Public Places are Sacred Spaces
Acrylic painted on polymetal
55' x 10'

This project began with the owner of the building wanting to be a good neighbor to the new amphitheater that is in front of this work.  He asked me if I could come up with something.  I know that this area once had 5 large burial mounds on it.  That is why it is titled Public Places are Sacred Spaces.  This community is embracing more and more the heritage of this place.  I wanted to make sure this chief, Wah-Pa-A-Sha III, wasn't forgotten and in a way, bring him back.  I bet he loved it here as much we do. This is the crew that is attaching the panels to the building.

In collaboration with Native educatior and artist, Inkpa Mani, and Native beading artist, Jalayahraven Whitecloud, the end panels represent healing plants native to the area.
I intended this work to be educational and respectful of the Dakota people who were here before us.  History has many stories and we need them all.
